We are a Tracy company. Our shop is on West Bethany Road in Mountain House, our longest-running routes are here, and most of the pools we look after every week are within a few miles of home.
Over the last few years those routes have stretched west into the Tri-Valley and north into East County. Which taught us something most pool companies out here never find out.
The water changes from town to town, and it changes a lot.
Tracy runs on soft surface water. So does Danville. Livermore and Dublin are hard. San Ramon manages both at once, because two utilities split the city down the middle. Pleasanton’s supply changed character entirely in 2022 when the city took its wells offline.
Those are not small differences. Soft water goes looking for calcium and takes it out of your plaster. Hard water drops calcium onto your tile and inside your heater. The treatments are close to opposite, and one chemical program run across the whole region will be right in some towns and quietly wrong in others.
That is why we test your fill water before setting a single target. It takes ten minutes on the first visit, and it is the reason our program looks different in Livermore than it does in Tracy.

Read across that and the pattern jumps out. Tracy and Danville sit at one end, Livermore and Dublin at the other, and a program built for one end will slowly damage a pool at the other. Same region, opposite treatments.
It also explains why a quote given over the phone, without anyone looking at your water, is mostly guesswork.

Your water is soft, and that surprises people. The City of Tracy draws roughly 97 percent of its supply from surface water, mostly the Stanislaus River with the rest coming down the Delta-Mendota Canal. The city states plainly that hardness is not an issue and softeners are not needed. Most homeowners assume Central Valley heat means hard water and scale. In Tracy the opposite risk applies.
Soft water is the aggressive kind. Calcium hardness in a plaster pool belongs between 200 and 400 ppm. Water that arrives low has spare capacity to dissolve calcium carbonate, and plaster is largely calcium carbonate. Left alone through a season of topping up, it works on your surface. You see etching, a gritty feel underfoot, and grout washing out of the tile line.
Drought changes the answer. When the city blends groundwater into the surface supply, hardness can climb, which is exactly why we re-test rather than assuming last year’s number still holds.
Then there is the heat. Tracy summers are long and dry, so evaporation runs hard and the autofill keeps replacing what leaves. On soft water every one of those gallons pulls your calcium a little lower.
